Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Participating in student journalism has given me the opportunity to meet people from a variety of backgrounds. Finding their stories, especially the ones that often go unnoticed, has become a passion for me and I’ve come to realize that nearly everyone has something unique and interesting worth highlighting.

Journalism, I have discovered, offers a tremendous opportunity to highlight diversity in our community. Unified athletics, which pairs students with and without intellectual disabilities on a united team, is a popular club at my school, and this year a kickball event was added to the program. Participating with and getting to know the special needs kids on the team was an insightful experience and interviewing them for a story allowed me to share their experiences with readers, offering insight to the club’s importance.

I’ve also had the opportunity to profile a politician, an alumni of my school, who ran for the Colorado Legislature. The story informed readers about not only his path to candidacy, but helped new voters inform their decisions regarding a potential representative. Not everyone is able to easily access this type of information, and, as a student journalist, I believe it’s crucial to provide audiences with thorough, unbiased information.
